Meet Dr. Matthew M. Rosman, GSEM, Director of The Golfing
Machine’s Division of Biomechanics and Sports Science.
What is your educational background and training?
I received a BA in psychology from Hofstra University in 1982 where I majored in pre-med and minored in religion. I received my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College (now known as Life University) in 1987. I hold a number of additional educational certifications in medical exercise, post-rehab training, health promotion, and golf performance.
Where did you practice as a doctor?
I owned and operated a chiropractic office on Long Island. I really enjoyed my years in private practice and was blessed with the opportunity to be actively involved as a board member in the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Kiwanis Club.
When did you co-found The Academy of Applied Personal Training Education?
In 1996 working in conjunction with my co-founder, Mr. Vincent Carvelli, we approached Hofstra University with a groundbreaking academic model by which personal training education and certification would be implemented. What was really great about this project was how enthusiastically Hofstra embraced the idea of an educational program of coursework for personal trainers rather than the existing correspondence type or weekend education format. The AAPTE is now celebrating 13 years of certification and continuing education with Hofstra and going strong!
How did you become acquainted with The Golfing Machine?
In my zeal for finding the right golf instructor and through much searching I was most fortunate to meet Michael Jacobs, GSED at Rock Hill Golf Club in Manorville, Long Island. He was instrumental in teaching me in all aspects of The Golfing Machine. He supported and encouraged me to become an Authorized Instructor. With his mentorship and a lot of hard work I earned the GSEM credential in 2002.
Why did you want to become an Authorized Instructor of The Golfing Machine?
Once you become exposed to The Golfing Machine you are changed forever! As a clinician with a traditional science background, I was so impressed with the method and manner by which Mr. Homer Kelley created his complete system of G.O.L.F. The exactness of his words, the terminology, the use of physics and geometry, and the diagnostic system is peerless in the world of golf education and instruction. I know that my personal improvement and advancement in skill would have never occurred without being under the guidance of an Authorized Instructor of The Golfing Machine like Mike Jacobs who has such respect for the value of Mr. Kelley’s material and dedicated himself to make sure that I received a very orthodox G.O.L.F. education. I really was excited then about the endless ways I could at some future point combine my clinical, exercise, and golf background to develop what is presently now BIA™.
How did BIA™ develop?
From the very beginning of my exposure to golf and once I was fortunate enough to be under the watchful eye of an Authorized Instructor of The Golfing Machine, I began to see the tremendous advantages in being able to understand the role of the “Human Machine” in the process of assimilating all the G.O.L.F. material. In fact, I would often review my golf lesson videos and map out the joint actions, planes, and muscles involved in my golf stroke pattern. I also saw the disadvantages those with special population issues had with their pattern development. By looking at the total picture of anatomy, motor-learning, and biomechanics as related to the laws of G.O.L.F. I was amazed to see how Human Machine and Golfing Machine related and functioned. I used these concepts after earning my GSEM working with golf clients and was extremely pleased to see outstanding results on special population golfers with my Swing Rehab and Skill Recovery Golf Program that I designed and utilized. This eventually led to the development of BIA™ after years of research and clinical applications as an Authorized Instructor working with my golf clients.
Could you have developed BIA™ without your education in The Golfing Machine?
Absolutely not! The Golfing Machine is the most comprehensive, scientific, and analytical based golf educational system ever created. Mr. Kelley spent decades researching and perfecting the information emphasizing the importance of the scientific method while respecting the notion of “variation” meaning that there are always lawful options for developing a proper central golf pattern. This is a true diagnostic approach by which the “one way only” single method is rejected. BIA™ functions within The Golfing Machine System and concepts and can do so because the clinical model has so much in common with The Golfing Machine System. Being the Director of The Golfing Machine’s Division of Biomechanics and Sports Science is probably one of the most exciting and most rewarding professional experiences of my life.
What can we expect from TGM and BIA™?
Well, my colleague and owner of The Golfing Machine LLC, Joe Daniels, GSED believes that “BIA™ stabilizes the machine.” I really am so grateful to Joe for his enthusiastic support of BIA™ which I think is based on the profound belief in the need for a greater appreciation and “integration” of technique and performance. This relationship with The Golfing Machine as the hub is the center of a concept I refer to as “Fusion.” The Golfing Machine technique and BIA™ performance creates the perfect partnership by which the golf instructor can produce the ultimate educational experience for golfers. In addition, the ability to be able to create new and close relationships with allied professionals in the health and fitness fields will allow for the ultimate “shared responsibility” approach in benefiting today’s golfer.
